What is a Car Chip or Semiconductor?

The chips, the crucial component that’s affecting vehicle production, is an important part of newer vehicles. In short, it is an electrical circuit. Chips are required for a lot of components in your vehicle from infotainment technology to the advanced driver-assist systems. They can even improve fuel economy. The more technologically advanced, electric powered vehicles like hybrids and EVs also require more chips than a traditional gas powered vehicle.

What is the Automotive Chip Shortage?

To put it simply, there is a high demand for computer chips and a limited supply. Automakers are requiring more chips for the production of vehicles, but chip manufacturers can’t produce the chips fast enough. That is what the car chip shortage is. Another issue in regards to the car chip shortage is that the focus is predominantly on creating newer chips, but this leaves the chips required for traditional gas-powered vehicles limited as well.

One of the primary causes of the car chip shortage was the COVID-19 pandemic. This caused factories to shut down and an increased demand for computers and other home devices focused the production in that arena. There are a lot of factors involved in that dynamic that have shifted the focus away from the chips required for vehicle production. Producing chips is also a time consuming endeavor.

How are Car Makers Adapting to the Automotive Chip Shortage?

There are a few things manufacturers are doing to adapt to the situation. For example, some dealerships in St. Paul may have “new” models available of previous vehicles, however, they have been adapted by removing chips required for certain functions. Some vehicle manufacturers are forced to keep cars in the lot until the chips can come in, and others are just using what’s available. While the chip shortage update looks like it will continue, but lessen, through 2022. It’s predicted to really calm down by mid-2023.
